Island Opportunities

Where can you travel the Inner Circle but see no train
Sit on a lion and feel no pain
See a Red Indian who has no tribe
And watch a crocodile that waits for the tide?
WHY MILLPORT!!!
WHY NOT???

Photograph of the literacies project participantsWelcome to the Island Opportunities Welcome to the Island Opportunities web page. Let us introduce ourselves. Our names are Anne Marie, Sharon, Lorna, William, Emma, Henry & Kelly-Anne and here we are in giant technicolour.

We are involved in a literacies project which has been funded by North Ayrshire Council as part of the government’s education for all initiative. We are a group of students working on a leaflet which will promote the Isle of Cumbrae to tourists and locals alike. We meet on a Thursday in the Smillie Centre in Millport and the project has a tutor and a support worker who assist us in our task. The leaflet will be distributed to the wider community in Millport and also tourists and will be launched in March 2004.

In our quest to attain this goal we asked some members of the community to participate in an interview and asked also if they had any photographs depicting scenes taken on the Isle of Cumbrae that with their permission we could use in the tourist leaflet, and on this web page. This was most informative and interesting and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the interviews for their assistance and support.

We are also taking photographs ourselves for use on the web page and the leaflet. We have been using disposable cameras, digital cameras and a video camera to take pictures and we are producing a short video of how we put the leaflet together. All very exciting stuff!
